Perozzi champ again NABC steps in awards her world middleweight belt By Don Burgess (Breaking from 2005-10-05 Edition) Teresa Perozzi is the world middleweight champion again. A bizarre series of events has seen Perozzi on a roller-coaster ride after giving Scroller Carrington "a wicked beating" to win the vacant WIBC world middleweight title on September 23. She was strpped of her title earlier this week by the WIBC because of irrgularities with the event, but today the he North American Boxing Council declared Perozzi saying the accomplishment of Perozzi “is not in dispute” and “neither is her status of champion.” NABC president Ed Hutchison sent the Bermuda Sun an e-mail today stating that Perozzi, and four other women who won title fights on September 23, would be awarded belts by his organization. Hutchison said: “A fighter gets paid to fight the person in front of them to the best of their ability for the time allowed. If a fighter performs well enough to win, the one thing that can never be taken away from them is the certainty of their victory.” “In the case of a title contest the same should be true for the certainty of championship recognition. “On September 23rd, 2005 at the Jean Pierre Complex, Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, however, the certainty of championship recognition failed.” Perozzi was presented with her title belt by WIBC president Don “Moose” Lewis in the ring, but then he tried to take it back claiming that he had not been paid all the fees owed to him by promoter Boxu Potts. Lewis also claimed he was denied access to the weigh-in and because of these two incidents he was un-sanctioning the title fights (see his letter in the sports section). Hutchison said: “Four women won championship contests as certified by the Trinidad and Tobago Boxing Board of Control, the government body assembled to officiate and supervise all fights in Trinidad and Tobago. “Like all participants in championship fights, Jizelle Salandy, Pamela London, Iva Weston, and Teresa Perozzi put their personal safety and professional careers on the line that evening for themselves, for their fans, and for the sport of boxing. Unlike most winners of championship contests, however, their championships were declared "not valid" and they were left with no recognition. (see http://www.bermudasun.bm/archives/2005-09-30/06Sports01) Regardless of the facts about disputes outside the ring, those were still disputes outside the ring. Failing to honor the personal courage, sacrifice and accomplishment of professional fighters who put everything on the line and did everything asked of them is unacceptable.” The NABC said effective immediately “Perozzi is recognized as the NABC women's world middleweight champion.” Hutchison said the accomplishment of Perozzi “is not in dispute” and “neither is her status of champion.” To make comment on this story please fill in the form below and click the Post Message button.
