National
female boxing champion Pamela London yesterday morning at Tower hotel
received her heavyweight championship belt she won in Trinidad in
September.
London was presented with the vacant NABC belt instead of the WIBC
belt that was at stake when she faced Kim Quashie in Trinidad.
According to Trinidadian fight promoter, Boxu Potts, both belts bear
the same significance. Potts said that the WIBC sanctioning body did
not want London to win.
Potts said that "the fight was mired in tremendous controversy but
it should not take away from the fact that another Guyanese has won a
WIBC belt."
The boxing promoter said all the belts for the fights on that night
were available before the fight. However based on the results of the
fights Moose Lewis retained the belts and fled the Island.
According to Potts there is a
charge awaiting Lewis. "A warrant is out for him, he committed a crime
in Trinidad called `larceny by trickery'."
Meanwhile, Secretary of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control, Trevor
Arno, said that the Board will pursue the matter until London is given
her rightful belt. Potts added that it may be a case where London ends
up with two belts. Potts praised the Guyana Boxing Board of Control for
having a history of producing competitive boxers. Acting on behalf of
the president of the local boxing board, Peter Abdul congratulated
London on her achievement, and she said "I am proud that I am a world
champion, I will remain focused."
London's new management team comprises Francis Anderson and
Antoinette Doris. Speaking on behalf of the new team Doris said that
they will be doing everything to help London make Guyana proud.
